Nicole Kangas

I am a social psychologist and a marriage and family therapist with a speciality in women's reproductive health, including infertility and fertility preservation.

I got my qualifications and did my training at...

Stanford University; Santa Clara University

My approach is...

Collaborative, holistic and specifically tailored to meet each woman's unique needs. During sessions, you can expect me to be active and engaged. I will also be unconditionally supportive, encouraging, and non-judgmental as we work together to address your challenges and reach your goals. I believe in building upon your strengths to help you work through obstacles. My hope is that through our work together, you will gain the confidence and clarity needed to address life’s challenges, to make impactful decisions, and to feel well. I believe every woman has the potential for satisfaction and fulfillment in life, and I would love to help you on your egg freezing journey, and your path to wellness.

I work in fertility because...

of my own reproductive struggles, combined with a long-standing interest in women’s health and well-being. When I went through my own infertility journey, I felt isolated and I longed for support from someone who understood what I was going through. It is incredibly rewarding to be able to provide that support to other women today. I see my work as a calling, and I consider it a privilege to help women with their reproductive struggles and decisions.

I'm interested in helping women undergoing egg freezing because...

making decisions about your reproductive health and future is incredibly important, and can be very stressful and anxiety-provoking. You may not have envisioned yourself being in a position where you would need to consider egg freezing. This may bring up bigger issues about your life course, your aspirations, and your relationships. I help women look at the broader picture of their life, whether they are single, divorced or widowed, or dealing with a medical condition that led them to consider egg freezing. Together, we will look at your hopes and your worries about the future (ie. What will your relationships look like; how will you combine roles such as work and parenting?) I also help women with other stressors that may be affecting their lives, such as work issues, family pressure, and concerns about egg quality and their biological clocks. By taking a holistic approach and addressing the array of issues that are affecting you emotionally and psychologically, my goal is to help you feel well.

I use the following techniques...

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Culturally Sensitive Therapy, Gottman Method, Positive psychology

Other things I specialize in are...

Adjustment Disorder, Anger Issues, Anxiety, Burnout, Body Image Issues, Career Counseling, Depression, Domestic Violence or Intimate Partner Violence, Family Conflict, Life transitions, Grief or Loss, Emotional Eating, Panic, Personal Growth, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Relationship / Marriage Issues, Self-Esteem, Sexual Abuse or Assault, Social Phobia, Stress, Suicidal Thoughts, Women's Issues, Compassion Fatigue, Job Stress, Attachment

I believe optimizing lifestyle and accessing emotional support are important during fertility treatment because...

Fertility treatments and reproductive decisions can be quite stressful. Self-care, healthy lifestyle choices, and emotional support can go a long way toward reducing stress and helping women feel better (emotionally and physically) during fertility treatment and cycles.

My interests outside of work are...

Spending time with family and friends, traveling, reading, and staying psychically active

Something you might not expect about me is that...

I was a lawyer before changing my career to focus on women's reproductive health.

I offer treatment in the following formats...

In-person and video conferencing. My preference is to meet in person but I realize that this isn't always feasible and in my experience, video sessions can be very effective.

My patients can expect this type of schedule from me during treatment...

Ideally, I like to meet with clients weekly, for a 50-minute session, though alternative schedules are sometimes appropriate, depending on the circumstances. Until I learn the specifics of a client's situation, I cannot predict the length of treatment or number of sessions, but this is something we can discuss during your phone consultation.

Exclusively for ELANZA members, I am offering...

I am offering a free 20-minute phone consultation for ELANZA patients.
