Doctor Bio

Dr. Coward is a urologic microsurgeon who specializes in male fertility care and is a resident of North Carolina. He received his MD with honors from UNC, where he also completed his internship in general surgery and residency in urology. Dr. Coward, board certified by the American Board of Urology, entered UNC Fertility in 2013 after completing a microsurgical fellowship in Male Reproductive Medicine and Surgery at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston with Dr. Larry Lipshultz. He is the Director of Male Reproductive Medicine and Surgery at UNC Fertility, as well as the Fellowship Director for the UNC Men's Health Fellowship, which trains potential leaders in the field of male fertility care.
Dr. Coward has been called to the prestigious Best Doctors in America ® lists for the years 2015-16 and 2017-2018, a distinction earned by fewer than 5% of physicians in the United States. Throughout his career, he has earned several academic honors, including Phi Beta Kappa and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Dr. Coward has hundreds of scientific journal articles and textbook chapters to his credit, and he discusses his work at national conferences on a regular basis. He is a member of the UNC Fertility team of doctors who collaborate with the Reproductive Medicine Network, a large NIH-funded network of centers of excellence that conducts multicenter clinical trials of male and female infertility.
